I LOVE MY AIRPODS

I know that title looks a little dramatic, but honestly? That’s how I genuinely feel about my little AirPods.

For years I have been a loyal Bose fan. Nothing beat their noise-canceling headphones and their in-ears. When iPhone ditched the headphone jack, I was fine using a dongle for a while. There were times when I wished for Bluetooth (like when I needed to charge my phone on the train and still wanted to listen to music).

That paragraph could alternatively read: I resisted the AirPods. In part, I was still annoyed with Apple for getting rid of the headphone jack and also in part because I thought they looked ridiculous. For a long time, the only people I would see wearing them were finance-bro looking guys. And… meh. I didn’t like it. The first time I saw someone in person using them, I actually thought they had a little cigarette in their ear, haha!

Now that I’ve gotten my initial reactions out of the way, I eventually decided to try them after hearing rave reviews from everyone and I wanted them for my Apple Watch. They truly live up to the hype. I thought I’d only use them some of the time and go back to my Bose, but I use them almost exclusively now.

Why I love my AirPods

I love them for so many reasons. My top reasons:

1. They fit in my ears. I’m extremely picky about how in-ear headphones feel and stay. These pass my test with flying colors. After posting them on Instagram, I had a bunch of questions about whether or not they stayed in during workouts. I have personally had zero issues. I even ran two 5ks with them and they didn’t budge!

2. The sound quality is shockingly great. I figured Apple would release a great product, but the sound is AMAZING. You don’t get the noise-canceling effect which can be beneficial on a plane, but otherwise, they do the best job*.

* I’m adding a caveat to say that I’m no expert in sound, but they sound great to an amateur aka me!

3. The storage case is perfectly designed. It’s easy to charge the headphones in it (and btw, you can go quite a while without having to recharge) and it’s the right size for pockets and handbags. I thought I’d lose one of the pods, but the case makes it simple to keep track of. There’s also a very satisfying magnetic “snap” when the headphone pops into place.

4. INSTANT CONNECTIVITY. It’s ridiculous how fast the AirPods connect to your device (laptop, phone, or Apple Watch). I thought I’d have to search for a Bluetooth signal every time I used them, but nope! I pop them into my ears and boop! We’re connected.

5. The controls kind of confused me at first, but once I figured how to change the commands in the settings, it opened up a whole new world. The default is for a double tap to bring up Siri. But I added play/stop on my right ear so I can better control my music. (When you’re wearing them people might not immediately realize you’re listening to music because they don’t stand out like normal headphones.)

6. This is the biggest thing for me: phone calls! I take phone calls all the time and typically put my phone on speaker to do it so I can take notes on my computer. I am amazed by how well the AirPods work for calls. Despite being at my ears and nowhere near my mouth, I’ve never had someone say they couldn’t understand me. The first time I took a call, I was outside walking my dogs and I forgot I was even talking through the AirPods. I asked if he could understand me and he goes, “Yeah, why?” He couldn’t tell the difference between a phone or the headphones at all.

AirPod

All in all, I’d recommend these, especially if you’ve been on the fence. My biggest concern (the way the look!) has also been dwindling as I see more and more people of all shapes and sizes wearing them. I think they’re becoming more ubiquitous so I feel less awkward walking around in public!

Anyone else love theirs?!

I love mine. I tell people they are life changing. My favorite use is just to have one in my ear while I do chores at home. I blast music to get and stay motivated, but I can still hear my kids when they need me!

You can use them with with most smartphones, ipods, ipads, laptops that support bluetooth 4 or 4.1. I use my airpods with my LG G6, and it works perfectly, even for phone calls! 🙂

Thank you for sharing. I’m super on the fence because I have really small ears and the traditional ear buds that Apple makes do not stay in my ears. If I’m sitting still i can use them, but if I move they fall out. I actually often use athletic headphones all day, but mine don’t have the ability to talk on the phone. They may go on the list of investment items!

Hey. I too have small ears and know the struggle. The AirPods work for me because the original wired ones do. So if those don’t work for you then the AirPods might not either. I love them for all the reasons in this post and a couple more (and I’ve just had them a week). Just don’t want you to possibly waste your money. Maybe you can try someone else’s first. Hope this helps.

I actually think they’re shaped slightly differently than the traditional Apple earbuds – I hated those because they really hurt my ears, but I haven’t had that issue with the Airpods!

I agree! The original buds always left my ears feeling “sore” or something. No pain with these!

I too have small ears, or maybe just odd shaped ears, but they do no stay in my ears. I have tried multiple times, but just like any apple earbuds, they just fall out! I recommend trying them out before buying. Alas they are not a perfect fit for everyone.

There are some accessories that can help with that! Kristen from Covering All Bases showed something that would fit on the Air Pod and attach to your ear.

I have been hesitant for a strange reason…my long hair! I’ve been afraid that they would get caught and/or tangled in my hair and fall out. Do you have any issues when you use them with your hair down?

Not at all! They’re better than say the regular headphones with the wire that gets all tangled!

I’ve had mine for a month and couldn’t agree with you more. I was always a Bose user and then switched to Beats (which I had nothing but issues with). When I had to replace the Beats for the THIRD time I decided to give the Air Buds a try and I’m so glad I do. The time you have between needing to charge is amazing, the sound is incredible and the ease of use is better than I could have imagined.

Carly… I have been following your blog for YEARS. We’ve even communicated through Twitter a few times…but this AirPods post has me wanting to run out and buy some right now! I love your opinions on different consumer products and feel as though I can trust you like a friend when it comes to your recommendations.

They really are the BEST! And laughing so hard at your comment about them looking like a cigarette in someone’s ear.

Ok I literally just read Grace of The Stripe’s rave review from the other day and it is so ironic bc mine are coming tomorrow(!!!) but another review!!! This is so great. So glad to hear how much you love yours and now I am even more excited!!

These sound great! Sometimes I feel like there is a lot of tech for the sake of tech, but the Apple Watch and wireless headphones aren’t that at all in my opinion. If anything they allow you to disconnect and not be tethered to your phone which is so great! xAllie http://www.tgeallthatglittersblog.com

Ok , so I have been seriously on the fence about these and have been reading all the reviews I can to decide whether or not to take the plunge. I use earbuds all day at work and I switch between connecting to my phone and laptop throughout the day which means I end up having to carry two separate sets of earbuds – 100% a first world problem! Anyways, is it easy to switch between connecting the airpods to your phone and laptop?

carly

So easy! They’ll connect to whatever is on, but you can easily switch via your Bluetooth settings if you have both open, but if you close your laptop, it’ll automatically connect to your phone

I see them all of the time at the grocery store I work at part time! People are talking and it used to throw me off but now I understand they’re on their phone using the Air Pods. Can’t wait to order mine! I was waiting to save to make the splurge! I’ve always used the apple headphones that come with the products, so I haven’t had to pay for some in a while! Lol

I SO love my Airpods too! But, I lost one on my 10km morning bike ride o work. I did get a replacement Airpod. So I started wondering how I could stop that from happening again. Later that week when I was waiting at checkout of a local Dollar store, I noticed they they had reading glasses Lanyards! BINGO! I bought a red pair as I didn’t want them to look like a cable. I also tied a knot about in them so that when a Airpod falls out of my ear, I can quickly pop it back in! I have NOT lost one Airpod since! AWESOME! hehe!

Hi Carly! I just got the 8+ and have been hesistant to try the air pods! Now I’m excited, but did the charging box part come with?? Because I’m not sure I have that!
Hope you’re having a nice day!

Thanks for writing this! I’ve been thinking about getting them for awhile now, but I’m nervous about the battery life. Do you think they’d last for a half marathon? I’d be surprised if they made it a full marathon … even my Apple watch died at mile 16. What do you think?

Reply
carly

Good question… I think the standard is 5 hours of playing time, so if you run under 5 hours and start with freshly charged AirPods, I think you’d be fine!

I’ve been so on the fence with these – I got the Bluetooth Beats pair and they’re fantastic except the wire around the nape of my neck can get caught in scarfs, collars, coats, etc sometimes and it’s frustrating.

Can you restart songs/skip songs using touch commands too or is it just pause and play? That’s one thing that would definitely make me consider buying them or not.

You can adjust the commands on settings. I know I tend to use my Apple Watch to actually control the music (especially when working out).

I was SO on the fence about these. But I just ordered an 8Plus the other day. The idea of not being able to comfortably have my phone in my back pocket at work to listen to podcasts while I’m filing really lit a fire under me to pick up a pair yesterday. I’ve only used them a couple times, but I am IN LOVE so far! They are so comfy and I was also so surprised the first time I took a call on them.

I’m still nervous about using them at the gym, but I can’t wait to give it a go.

When I first heard about the ‘jackless-airpods’ I thought it was ridiculous. But I tried it this weekend thanks to a friend and I heard the difference as well. I still don’t think it a good idea for me, seeing as its so small~ and I will most likely lose it.

I bought a pair of AirPods and I was impressed with them. In how they feel in my ears. They’re very comfortable and the sound is very good. I’m a very picky person when it comes to sound. And the AirPods sound great. I have watched a few videos on the AirPods and and heard the critics. They don’t know what they are talking about? The AirPods are great.
