5 Questions to Ask to Make the Best Use of Your Time

This is the perfect post from Maxie for a Monday! I always have the best intentions at the beginning of the week, but by the end I know there were moments where I could have used my time more wisely. Hoping this will serve as a guide this week!

5 Questions to Ask to Make the Best Use of Your Time

Guest post by Maxie McCoy

Whether we admit it, or whether we realize it, and whether we like it or not, time is the quiet bodyguard of our lives – deciding what we do, for how long, and when. Time can be fully on our side, or fully against us, depending on how we choose to use it.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes time feels like this abundant resource I can use to fulfill so many of the things that are important to me. And other weeks it feels like there’s simply never enough time to do anything that I need or want to accomplish. But regardless of which camp I’m in from week to week, there are a few things that are always worth the time.

Knowing what’s worth your time matters. Because your to-do list will always (alwayssss) be there. You’ll always be adding to it. And you’ll always have only 24 hours in the day to get through things. So when it comes to using this precious, daily resource, we’ve all got to use it wisely. Here are a few questions to ask yourself about your time to figure out how to be filled up rather than dragged down:

Have I done something small for a long-term goal? We feel like there’s never enough time when we’re obsessed with the big picture. Well, don’t make it so big on yourself. Your time will create more momentum when you’re consistent. Each day, regardless of your to-do’s, find a way to do something super small right now, for the extra big thing later on.

Have I done something for myself? Whether that’s a workout, a green smoothie, some meditation, picking up a book or dancing in the kitchen. Doing things for yourself that have nothing to do with your to-do list is immensely important because it’ll help you feel alive with your time instead of just a robotic soldier marching through your day.

Have I gotten the 3 most important tasks done today? Use your top three to keep you on track when getting tasks done. Whether that’s some email follow up, your school work, or your laundry, ask yourself what those top 3 things are each day and if you’re on track to get them done. It’ll keep your to-do list from doing you.

Could I put my phone away instead right now? Be honest. Because the answer is probably yes you should put your phone down and do things instead of just texting, scrolling, and surfing endlessly. It’s not helping. And it’s totally (mostly) wasting your time.

Where can I connect with someone I love? Our humans are our everything. And connection is never something that should falter no matter how busy you’re feeling. Whether it’s Facetiming with your bestie across the world for even just 10 minutes, or having a quick coffee date with your mom, make the most of each day with someone you love. Be fully present. And you won’t be worried about the time you do or don’t have.

Getting your relationship with time right is immensely important. And it’s not just so you can be super productive or efficient. It’s bucketing your time so all the things that keep you positive and filled up are taken care of. You’ve got to be consistently taking care of what matters most to you, and time will always be on your side.

This is a fabulous guest post- thanks Maxie and Carly! I really liked your first point, about doing something small for a long-term goal. I too can get very caught up in the “big picture,” so I tend to break my goals up into smaller ones. If I have a big year-end goal, I’ll break it up monthly, as well, so I’m consistently making progress and don’t lose that momentum or get too caught up in how big it is. Thanks again for the great post!

I’ve been thinking a lot about time management lately, and am going to take every item on this list into account in the future. I think the 3 most important tasks tip is going to be huge for me – I often get sidetracked by a million small “fires” instead of accomplishing big items I have to do. xAllie http://www.theallthatglittersblog.com

Yes to the three important tasks! I used to write extensive to-do lists that could feel a bit overwhelming, but now I always prioritise my top three tasks per day, and keep a running list of smaller tasks that I could make my way through only if I finished my top three tasks, had extra time, and had the energy for it 🙂 And I wouldn’t beat myself up if I didn’t get to that list of small tasks. // Also loving the question about putting your phone away! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

Great post, Maxie! I find myself asking the “putting my phone away” question a lot lately. I’ve been training myself to leave my phone on my nightstand on silent when I’m home enjoying time with my husband and dog. I find that it’s been helping me connect more and enjoy living in the moment.

Great tips and advice. It’s always daunting to take on big tasks and tackle the to-do list, but I like how you handle your time. It’s all to do with discipline and getting in the habit of it, and I think I can get there with your tips 🙂

I love this post! I’ve been really interested this past year in reevaluating how I manage my time and reprioritizing. We live in such a fast paced world and I often find that I don’t feel in control of my own time. Strategies like the ones you shared here have helped me feel so much more in control of my life. I finally feel like an active participant instead of just going through the day-to-day motions! If you end up looking into this topic further I’d love to see more posts about it!
All the best
