The Meghan Markle J. Crew Coat

I’m not someone who regularly follows the royals, but I do really enjoy Meghan and Kate’s style (and Pippa’s, too). I especially love it when they wear more attainable brands. Nothing worse than loving a dress one of them wore, only to discover that it costs $2,000.

When I originally saw the photos of Meghan Markle wearing this J. Crew coat, I went to go buy it and, of course, it was sold out. Apparently, it went back on sale in November and sold out again. I hope J. Crew brings it back and maybe introduces it in other colorways– black would be lovely and classic.

Even though it was sold out, I wasn’t deterred and put an alert on eBay for sizes I think it would work. One popped up and I scooped it right up. I thought they would charge an arm and a leg, but I actually got it for the original listed price. (Of course, J. Crew usually has a sale every day, so I have a feeling this person bought it at a discount and still made a pretty penny on the sale.)

I ended up getting a 0 and while it fits, I think a 00 would fit even better. I have to have a new closure put in so I can make it a little tighter. I’m usually a 0 in J. Crew coats, so if you’re going to hunt for one, consider sizing down so that it fits just right. I definitely don’t recommend sizing up more than your usual size.

What I LOVE about this coat is just how sleek and stylish it is when dressed up. It works really well for a professional look, but that hasn’t stopped me from wearing it dressed down as well. It’s easy to throw on and is made from stadium-cloth wool so it’s extra warm.

Meghan wore the navy coat with black pants and black pumps, but I just can’t bring myself to mix the two. (Thoughts?!?) Instead, I opted for a cream cashmere turtleneck and skinny navy pants (these are a similar option, mine are old).

I used to think navy and black shouldn’t be worn together but now it’s my fav combo. Go for it!

I’m not a fan of mixing black and navy either. BUT it does seem to be a popular trend. I cringe when I think about using a navy crossbody over a black top.

I love that coat. And coming from someone who thinks wearing white after Labor Day (and yes, that includes white jeans!) is the ultimate sin, I still always mix black and navy. It feels perfectly Parisian to me. A navy turtleneck sweater with black ankle pants and black Chanel flats feels so much more sophisticated than if the outfit were all black.

I have this coat on alert since I first saw it sold out as well. I had it in my cart on sale and should have pulled the triggers. Buyer’s remorse. Anyway, I think you look better in it than Meghan and hope I can attain it this winter. I am the same way with navy and blue! I find it hard to mix, but doing better with that lately. My bean boots are black and blue so I can mix easier. Beautiful pics and love following you Carly!

I can’t bring myself to mix black and navy either, though weirdly I think it looks really sharp on my husband when he does it. Love the way you styled this!

What a beautiful outfit. Honestly, I love mixing navy and black! It takes some getting used to but I truly think the colors look gorgeous and so chic together. Also, this coat looks like the perfect size on you. I think anything smaller wouldn’t lay right. (Unless these pictures were taken after the alterations haha)

I love this styling of the coat! You should check out @eholmes on instagram, she posts “So Many Thoughts” about the Royals’ outfits and the meaning/messages behind their fashion. It’s so fun and informative!

Looks great! Mixing navy and black works! Black watch plaid is a great example of navy and black working well together!

Yes! Finally someone who won’t mix navy and black. I tell this to my family and friends and they always try to convince me that “anything” goes with black or navy, so they are fine together. I still can’t seem to wear them together!!

Love the coat! The contrast piping is beautiful and you’ve styled it into a great outfit, as always. My only wish, and I mean this as kindly as possible, is that you didn’t include your exact size when you make a post about an outfit. One of my best friends is battling with an eating disorder and when she sees people post about their size or their weight it can be triggering to her. Sometimes she sees it as a new goal for her to achieve in terms of losing more weight, which would be disastrous for her. I don’t know much about eating disorders, but I don’t think she’s alone in this. Instead of posting your exact size, it could be helpful to just say if an item runs large or small; you’d be giving equally useful information without stating your size. That’s just a thought, coming from a place of love for my friend. Once again, adorable outfit and beautiful coat. Your taste is impeccable!

I try to include my exact size because people end up asking anyway. I understand that size is a sensitive issue for some, but I don’t believe that censoring information is healthy and instead learning and recognizing how to live with triggers in life is a more sustainable way.

Yes, as a consumer I find the specific sizing information helpful because vanity sizing is so common among brands. Please continue to share.

Hi Carly! Off-topic question: is this Kate Spade bag big enough to use as a work bag? (I.e. can fit a laptop, notebook, a few folders, etc.) On a related note, have you ever thought about doing a blog post about work-appropriate bags? I always have so much trouble finding ones that are big enough, and that have a zipper/ closure so laptops, important papers, etc. don’t get wet in the rain.

Also, love the outfit and the Meghan coat!

This is such a classy coat and really elevates any outfit. I could see it also being cute with a little double denim or even athleisure. I hear you on the navy/black thing. As much as I recognize there are no rules, I still struggle with pairing the two.
