Reading is probably one of my favorite hobbies. I crave quiet moments during the day when I can read a few pages. Train rides into the city and 20 minutes before bed are the best I can do right now. (My dream would be to go on a vacation for a week without a phone or wifi and just READ for, like, a week straight.)
I’ve been trying to read books with a little more substance, but to be honest, right now, I have such little time to read that I need page-turners. Something to get into quickly… and stay awake for more than five minutes.
Here are two books I recently read and enjoyed!
First up… The Couple Next Door. This is not the best-written book in the world. But you know what? The story is really freaking good. The characters are all pretty unlikeable, but I couldn’t stop turning the page to figure out what was going to happen. The Couple Next Door definitely falls under the same category as Gone Girl. In the book, the couple’s infant daughter is kidnapped, but they don’t know who took her and why.
This is another quick read. I was flying through it without even realizing. It’s about a family falling apart as their daughter applies to Harvard. The Gatekeepers was required reading for my high school, and I think The Admissions is like a fictional version of it. I Snapchatted saying that I was reading it and got a few responses from readers that they started the book but couldn’t continue because it stressed them out. I agree; it brought back some not-so-great memories for me about the college application process. That said, it’s a great read and has a good message (for families and students) despite being fiction. If you start and get stressed out… keep going. It’s worth it. (I also want to make a note that even though I just said, the content can be a little stressful to read, it’s actually written with a lot of humor. I enjoyed Moore’s writing style a lot!)
Have you read anything great recently?
