5 Healthy Recipes for the Grill

We had our very first barbecue of the season in our backyard this past weekend. I usually let someone else take over the grill (like my dad or Mike!), but last summer I donned the grill tongs and fired up the grill by myself while on vacation. While the results were far from perfect… the burgers and hot dogs still tasted delicious and it gave me so much more confidence to do it again! (Need a shortcut though? I have a grill pan that mimics a grill, minus the barbecue flavor, and it’s so much easier to clean/handle on an everyday basis!)

5 Healthy Recipes for the Grill

Guest post by Louisa from Living Lou

Barbecuing has become something my friends and I do all the time in the summer. There are lots of apartments with rooftops and grills in Toronto and I love it–we definitely take advantage when the weather is hot! A lot of my favourite things to eat on the grill aren’t necessarily the most healthy, that’s why I spend a lot of my time in the summer developing healthier options for the barbecue.

Here are five of my go-to, healthier grilling options for the summer!

1. Grilled salmon in foil with cherry tomatoes

This recipe is inspired by the flavours of bruschetta–grill salmon in foil in just ten minutes with cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives and finished off with a drizzle of balsamic glaze and fresh basil.

2. Grilled asparagus salad with basil vinaigrette

I love grilled asparagus–it’s definitely my favourite vegetable to grill. Here I tossed it with a homemade basil vinaigrette, goat cheese and other salad staples. I’ll often add grilled chicken as well for a full meal!

3. Grilled sweet potatoes on the barbecue

Grilling potatoes is one of the best sides–I make sweet potatoes and regular potatoes like you would a baked potato in the oven and then you can choose whatever toppings you like!

4. Greek grilled chicken wings

If you haven’t grilled chicken wings, it will change your life! We’ve been making these all summer long for our friends and family whenever we have people over. Everyone is always shocked by how amazing these are!

5. Grilled salmon skewers

Throw some salmon chunks, zucchini, bell peppers and onions on skewers and whip up a simple four ingredient marinade. If you don’t have salmon, you can easily swap in some chicken breasts as well!
