On My Radar

Not much to report this week. It was pretty typical, which is my favorite kind of week. Two positive things:

1) I went to my first borough council meeting. It was kind of what I expected it to be like and also slightly different. (It wasn’t that far off from what you see in Gilmore Girls to be honest and our mayor actually looks like Taylor!!) It was definitely an eye-opening experience; it became really apparent how important it is to vote for local officials because they’re controlling the things that directly affect you on a day-to-day basis. Again, that’s what I expected…. but to see it in action really lit a fire under me to get even more involved. (I also teared up in the first ten minutes because a community member came and read a poem she wrote about the town and it was so beautiful!) I also didn’t realize how fired up I could get over a shady tree ordinance, but here I am now.

2) This has been the best January yet for my business. This is usually such a slow period of time but there are so many great things coming down the pipeline. Last year was more of a transition year, both personally (when we were buying our house then moving into the new house) and professionally (my manager was fired last January and I had to transition onto another one’s roster). It was ALL ultimately positive (love our house and love my new manager), but transitions can be tough. Right now I’m definitely reaping some of the benefits of “surviving” (for lack of a better word) that transition period. Just feeling really good! And next week I have a fun project that I was asked to do… and it’s an even bigger production than I realized so I’m even more excited! Can’t wait to share more…

Laptop Sleeve

Not the most inspiring picture but I’ve been getting cabin fever at home so I’ve been doing a couple of hours of work every afternoon in a coffee shop or Starbucks. Helps break up the day for sure!! (And how cute is my new laptop sleeve?!!? Highly obsessed.)

Here’s what has been on my radar all week:

ONE // The Cast of Cheer On Ellen

I’m still on the Cheer train. They’ve been doing an intense press tour and I can’t get enough of it!!!  I loved their interview and cameo on the Ellen show. Jerry’s mat talk is everything. (And if you haven’t seen him doing mat talk for people going to work… you must!!)

TWO // Navy Bow Pumps

Well, helloooooo beautiful!!!! These shoes are stunning. I love that the pump is suede and the bow is satin– the contrast looks so sophisticated. They’re also 50% off right now and I’m not sure you can beat that!

THREE // How to Start Therapy

I’m a huge advocate for therapy. And even though I’m personally quite well-versed in participating in therapy, I still get intimidated by going! It does get easier over time, especially as you build trust with a therapist, but life changes (like a move or a particularly stressful time) can make going a hurdle again. Here are some helpful tips for getting started with therapy!

FOUR // Willa Heart Needlepoint Canvases

I just about fell out of my chair when I saw this collaboration for needlepoint canvases!! Willa Heart makes the cutest artwork with bright colors and quirky motifs. And I’m so excited to see that she’s doing a line of canvases with The Plum Stitchery! I can’t wait for them to launch…

FIVE // Gucci Bucket Bag

While I’m not totally into everything Gucci does, I do like their classic pieces, particularly the horse-bit collection. I fell in love with this little bucket bag and think it’s going to be my “year end” splurge. I tried tracking one down in stores to touch and feel it before committing but they didn’t have it in stores in NJ. So I bought it online…. I’m 95% sold on it and can’t wait to see it in person. Fingers crossed it’s “the one.”

Don’t know if you know, but TJ Maxx has a lot — A LOT– of high end designers on line. If you are looking for a Gucci, YSL, Lanvin, etc., you might check out The Runway selection. I got the perfect YSL there for about 1/2 the usual price. Kind of takes the sting out of it and I love the bag even more. (I have also gotten several high end clothing items, all in mint condition! And don’t forget to check The Runway clearance, even better deals.)

I definitely feel like the Gucci bucket bag is your style, I can’t wait to see how you wear it! I agree that the horsebit pieces feel a little less trendy and are probably more of a worthwhile investment.

Yikes. Sweetie that was beyond unnecessary. Just don’t follow Carly if she upsets you this much – life is much to short!

Carly – you keep being you. And YOU are fabulous 😉

Wow. This kind of hatefulness is beyond nuts to read. I love Carly’s blog. I’m not exactly that most preppy in my style, but she gives me lots of inspiration. She also responded promptly and helpfully when I asked her a question via email. Plus she seems like a truly kind person. I never comment on blogs but I can’t let this go.

So I watched the Ellen clip because I’m obsessed with “Cheer” thanks to you and in the one of their routine I’m pretty sure I saw Lexi… I wonder if Monica let her back on?

So, this is unrelated but I am from Florida too and have some sun damage to my skin. Recently, I found Jason Vitamin E oil at my grocery store ($8 a bottle) and it is magic! It is literally melting the sun damage from my face, my husband even noticed and said I look 5 years younger.
It is also supposed to prevent skin cancer. I know you do posts on skin cancer/sun exposer so I thought I would share.

I love the blog (have been reading for 8 years), but think it’s extremely unprofessional that you mention your former manager being fired.

Why do you feel the need to mention on a public blog that someone was fired? Such an unnecessary and unprofessional comment. You know how good of Internet sleuths people are these days, it would be pretty easy for someone to figure out who you’re referring to. Someone mentioned the GOMI thread above, from the few times I have read, it is mostly cruel. But you do give them material to work with when you make these types of thoughtless, out of touch comments.

Carly, would you ever consider writing a post on how you deal with the internet trolls? Though we all know that they’re crazy, I can’t imagine that it never gets to you. Unfortunately, they are a side effect of success!

I’m sorry, but calling out unprofessionalism does NOT make me an internet troll. Would you call out a co-worker or manager who got fired on a public page for the world to see?

JAMI, I don’t think that you’re one of the internet trolls. You are absolutely allowed to express your opinion since the whole objective of a blog is to spark conversation. I also think that you expressed yourself in a respectful way (unlike others who sometimes post comments on here). To answer your question though, I would never name the person or the company he/she works for, but what’s so wrong with saying that the person got fired? I mean it kind of spices up the whole blog post. All I could think of when I read that was “what did the manager do to get fired?!” It’s all entertainment at the end of the day and nobody personally got insulted. No?
