On My Radar

Corporate taxes were due this week. While I spent most of January doing the heavy lifting, there were a few things consistently lingering over my head. Let me just say, thank god for good accountants. I like to think that it takes all kind of people who make the world go round, but these accountants man. They really are gifts from god. (Especially from someone who has unfortunately-this-is-not-an-exaggeration PTSD from my college accounting class.)
Anyway, the taxes are filed. Hamilton is adjusting so well into our family. It was mostly sunny and springy all week even though it was forecasted to rain. AND, I’m in Florida now visiting my family. How’s that for a good week????
If you’re not a regular reader of Brain Pickings, you should be. The articles are fantastic and always get me thinking. This article about the difference between fixed and growth mindsets is really good. Having a growth mindset can really change your life for the better! It’s a little bit of a lengthy read so you may want to bookmark it for when you have some time to sit down and dig in.
Instagram is starting to change the way you see your content in your feed. I think this has potential to be good… but also could be bad if you end up missing things! I hate when I feel like I missed a friend’s post so I’m hoping the change isn’t too dramatic. That said… if you want to make sure you never miss one of my Instagrams (?), you can select to turn post notifications on. Just pop over to my profile on your phone, click the “…” on the upper right, and click “Turn On Post Notifications.” Love ya!
The trailer for the second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was just released and the countdown is officially on. The first season was too funny and from the trailer, it seems like they’ve raised the bar even more!
I thought this was a great Today Show segment with Natalie Morales on why she went to Rutgers. I know a lottttttt of high school seniors sorting through college acceptances and dealing with rejections. Natalie’s advice is very relevant here! It wasn’t her first choice for college, but she made a smart decision and ended up in the perfect school for her.
This. Video. Is. Everything. EVERYTHING. My family had a strict rule about eating dinner together every night. In high school that sometimes meant 15 minutes squeezed in between my rowing practice and my sister’s soccer practice, but we always sat at the table and ate together. Looking back, I think it’s one of the most defining reasons of why we’re so close. We laughed. We talked. And someone almost always inevitably cried, all in good fun.

On My Radar

It hasn’t felt much like December here! Too, too warm. Too little snow. We had a day ski trip planned for Monday and we canceled knowing it would be nothing more than slush! I keep forgetting that Christmas is next week… time is flying.
I was in the city on Tuesday for various meetings. It’s actually kind of nice to not be freezing or have to bundle up… but still being able to take in all the holiday sights. I cut through Bryant Park between meetings and was dying to ice skate!
On my radar this week…
Wow. I was pretty excited and admittedly unsure about the new Full House series for Netflix. However, the teaser Netflix just released is amazing…. I had honest-to-goodness goosebumps! Cannot wait.
I’ll take this house, please. Is this estate not the most beautiful?! Mickey Drexer just sold it for a casual $50 million dollars. If you scroll through the slideshow, definitely don’t forget to read the captions!
If you’re reading this on your desktop, bookmark this link to view on your phone. Not only is the video cool itself, t’s incredible technology. You can literally move your phone around and get a full 360 degree view of the rehearsal.
This is a pretty great interview with John Mulaney. (I selfishly love it because he’s also a Georgetown grad!) I always appreciate when anyone shares stories of success and more importantly failure and most importantly moving on from failure.
FIVE // The Tail End
I love how this puts things into perspective and also find it alarming how it puts things into perspective. Especially the part about how many more times he’ll see his parents… I’m in the same boat. On a lighter note, his pizza graphic was eye-opening. I have plenty of pizza every week (whoops), but I rarely let myself order a bagel… but I love bagels. Let’s just say, after seeing that pizza graph and thinking about how many more bagels I would realistically enjoy, I’m getting a bagel if I want a bagel.

Any fun weekend plans?!

#5 The Tail End is SO interesting. Really makes you think about the time you have left to spend with all the people you care about. On a lighter note, also makes me think about all dumplings that I could have left to eat 🙂

Not related to this post at all, but I saw that the L.L. Bean fisherman sweater is on sale for $70 right now! I really want to buy one or two, but do you think that price will go down any further after Christmas? It seems like L.L. Bean doesn't have too many big sales or discounts.

WOW to The Tail End article. Made me a bit emotional, honestly. Great thing to read during the holiday season. I will be ditching my electronics next week while I'm with my family that's only all together once a year!

Gosh, seeing that ice rink is making me want to go to the one set up near me in the local shopping centre every Christmas! I went ice skating for the first time a couple of years ago (didn't fall over!) And really want to have another go!

On My Radar

I’ve been bopping between Connecticut and New York City a lot the past week. I opted out of a few things just so I could stay home and get some work done. I haven’t had a lot of “desk time” during the day lately which has translated to really late nights and one tired Carly.
On Saturday, Garrett and I took Teddy to the pet store for a birthday shopping spree! I wanted to take cute pictures of him but it started pouring… If you follow on Snapchat (collegeprepster) you may have seen how excited he was to shop haha. I cannot believe he turned two! TWO! Where has the time go?? I remember when I didn’t think I’d survive the first month of having a puppy and now I can’t imagine life without him.
My best friend in the entire world was in the city this weekend so I went down to meet her for lunch. I randomly saw on her Friday crossing the street while I was in a cab, talk about a small world! It is always the best to catch up with her and it doesn’t matter how much time goes by in between visits, we can pick up right where we left off. Also… Nicole, her boyfriend, Garrett, and I have a really fun trip planned for the first weekend of October. Can’t wait to share more details!!!
On Monday, I was invited to Seventeen magazine’s headquarters for a special Essie manicure. It was really fun to meet a bunch of readers and see some familiar faces at the event afterward. Also, the view was unreal.
And Garrett’s birthday was yesterday! (If you’re keeping count, our whole tiny family has September birthdays! Lots of Virgos under one roof…) We celebrated with banana pancakes in the morning and finished the night with honest-to-goodness the BEST chocolate cake I’ve ever had. I found the recipe on Pinterest, naturally, and it’s been officially added to my collection of favorites. Garrett and I are launching our Youtube channel in the next day or so, I’ll share here as soon as it’s live!
Now here’s what has been on my radar:
Everything about this Thought Catalog post… It brought back so many memories! I honestly remember being so relieved that my dance class didn’t start until 4pm so I could catch a television show after school. Anyone else find this list familiar?!
I loved this interview with Vera Wang. Really valuable advice here and I would definitely think it’s applicable to a lot of people regardless of personal situations. The final quotation is so good: “So don’t be afraid of failing. I think not trying is worse than failing. Have the courage to try. Otherwise, what are we here for?”
I was in awe watching Ariana Grande freaking nail it when impersonating other singers with Jimmy Fallon. I don’t think she could have been more spot on if she tried! The Celine Dion one had me in tears!
File this under things I definitely don’t need but 100% want: lifesaver Stubbs.
This this this this. I think we can all relate to cropping down life to a perfect square for Instagram. For some reason, it totally makes sense when I do it and I forget that other people are doing the exact same thing. I look at someone else’s square and assume they’re living a #perfect life without remembering they have cropped out the crowd of people in the left, the cluttered corner to the right, etc.
Has anything great popped up on your radar this week?

On My Radar

I’m writing this post at 10pm on Thursday night. (I most always write my posts two hours before they have to go live at midnight actually– I like the pressure from the deadline!) It’s been a long week, but I actually had to go back to my calendar and scroll through my iPhone photos to remember what exactly happened. Seriously, it’s been one of those weeks. A couple of press previews (omg, I can’t wait for these shoes!) and a few meetings here and there… but my two favorite things? Getting to talk with a group of interns– they were awesome. AND getting to meet a bunch of readers in Connecticut at the new Lou and Grey store.
I don’t think I can emphasize enough how incredible it is to meet with readers. Sometimes blogging can be lonely and singular when it’s just me and my computer all day and sometimes I can let stress get in the way of enjoying what I do. Whenever I meet someone who reads my blog, it’s this glorious reset! An amazing little reminder of what the greater purpose is! I’ve tallied it up and I think I got to meet somewhere around 200 readers in the past seven days. No big deal or anything, but you guys totally rock my world 🙂

Insert all the rainbow and heart emojis.

ONE // Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Three words: DO NOT MISS.

TWO // Kacy Catanzaro

This girl is my new hero. Can we just talk about her strength, agility, and downright determination. I can’t even describe how in awe I am of her. She conquered the American Ninja Warrior course like a true pro. And doesn’t she make it look easy?! GIRL POWER. When she starts leaping from pole to pole… omg. The audience’s reactions are priceless. I’ve bookmarked the video on my computer because I want to be able to view it every time I a) feel lazy b) feel like I can’t accomplish something and/or c) need a boost of inspiration.

THREE // Elaine Strich Passed Away

89 years young. Elaine Strich is a true Broadway legend. I literally just watched her documentary (Elaine Strich: Shoot Me… added it to my documentaries list!) a few weeks ago. She’s a character and a half. If you don’t know who she is, check out this NY Times article and I definitely recommend the documentary for everyone.

FOUR // Kate Spade Bathing Suits

Okay, they’re not available yet. But I have a trip to the beach planned for January 2015 and I will absolutely be rocking a Kate Spade bathing suit!! Already counting down the days. The release of the swimwear line is currently slated for November.

FIVE // Chimps Attend Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Screening

I couldn’t help but include this totally feel good Youtube clip. Seriously… those little monkeys are too cute. The way they handed over their movie tickets?! I just about died. And the popcorn munching! Too much. Too, too much. Definitely the best little pre-weekend pick-me-up!

What’s on your radar for this week? Any fun weekend plans?

OMG Kate Spade bathing suits!! I think my heart just melted and I made the face of the emoji with hearts for eyes and the cute pink bathing suit right next to it! Honestly cannot wait. And muchas gracias for the update about the Nordstrom sale… I already have items in my cart (a true shopping addict).

On My Radar

This has been a tough week. Teddy is thankfully healing, but keeping him immobile is like a full time job. I can’t wait for this month to be up… I think he’s even more bored than I am worried!
On top of that, I finally figured out why I’ve been so darn tired recently. (Did I mention on here that I had been dozing off in the middle of the day… falling asleep around 9pm… and utterly unable to stay awake if things ever slowed down at all?) I’ve been sniffly for a while and I attributed it to allergies. #finallyspringinNYC But the sniffles didn’t go away and I had to admit defeat to the Cold. I get a bad cold once a year and I think this is it. I’d definitely choose to have a more intense cold once rather than be sick a few times a year. Anyway… I’ve been hit and I’ve been hit hard.
I’m talking 10 pillows to elevate my head so I can breathe while I’m sleeping. Nose spray, tissues, watery eyes, and early bedtimes and lots of “snoozing” in the morning. It’s kind of good timing because I’ve basically cooped myself up in my apartment, perched myself on my bed + laptop, and grabbed little Teddy so he can recuperate on the bed with me. Best rest for everyone.
I typically hate being knocked off my feet, but with a crazy first quarter of 2014, it’s been nice to be forced to slow down.
ONE // Babies Eating Lemons

I can’t get enough of these videos. Babies eating lemons will always be funny. Add in slow motion and roly poly baby bellies? Amazing. My mom and dad thought feeding my sister and me lemons was so funny. This is the perfect video to watch if you’re having a down day!

TWO // The Confidence Gap Between Men and Women

(Apparently there’s a lot of GAPS being talked about recently!) But the confidence gap between men and women is a particularly important one. This article is long and dense, so I recommend bookmarking it so you can read it when you have time. Honestly, some of it resonated more than other parts, but it did get me thinking about it. Most specifically, I started to notice my own behavioral patterns.

THREE // Justin Timberlake Evolution

I can’t tell if I’m proud or embarrassed that I watched this seven minute video. I was never too into boy bands although my first concert was Backstreet Boys and my first CD was ‘N Sync. These guys did an impressive job going through the evolution of Justin Timberlake. I couldn’t help but ask myself a) who taught them all of this, b) how long did it take, c) did they have time to actually go to class.

FOUR // Harry Potter Theory

I love a good conspiracy theory and I love Harry Potter. Two together?! Bah! Brilliance. I obviously got super into this guy’s theory and it made me want to reread the books!

FIVE // The Mini Mobile Robot Printer

Welcome to 2014. The future seems to have finally arrived. This has to be the best Kickstarter campaign I’ve ever seen. It totally blew my mind and made me wonder why no one else have thought of it! These guys are kind of my new heroes. I had a printer in college, but donated it when I graduated because it was such a hassle to pack and move. I now do all my printing at Kinkos (inconvenient) or Garrett’s (I have to beg… haha). Would love one of these little machines!

What’s on your radar this week?

That lemon video is funny! And I watched the whole Justin Timberlake video a few days ago – it's very entertaining.

First off, I'm 100% with you on being SUPER excited about that mobile printer. As soon as I saw it I could only think, this is perfect! Why didn't they make it sooner? Also I'm glad to see they met their goal on kickstarter. Clearly everyone else agrees with how they made their prototype too!

Also, the Harry Potter theory was fantastic to read. I really like that alternate ending!

More importantly (since I was procrastinating on studying for my fluids and analytical chem exams) I read the piece on the confidence gap between men and women and agree with what they said and have seen the full range of confidence levels in my friends in classes and unfortunately in myself as well. The most confident people I know are guys except for one girl in Biomedical Engineering (I'm so proud to call her my friend). Absolutely I see confidence level corresponding to better performance on exams, even if people study together and understand the material to the same degree. It's a matter of levelheadedness while taking exams, I would think, that contributes to this gap in success in higher education. Furthermore, even some of the PhD candidates I've known during my time in undergrad have showed the same trend. Thesis defenses go better when you're confident in what you're saying, even if you don't know as much. I guess the challenge now is to go try and incorporate this in my life and see if I can help any brilliant underachieving women out there to believe in themselves!

Thanks for the post, Carly, it really got me thinking!
