On My Radar

I’m in Chicago right now and having the best time. I’m just spending time with friends but also squeezing in a few touristy things. I just love this city so much! (It also doesn’t hurt that it’s basically perfect weather right now.)
I’ll be sharing more about my trip to come, but in the meantime, a friendly little tip!
Backup your devices!!!! I always forget to do this and then someone will post a tweet about losing everything on their phones, and I remember. So hopefully this is a good reminder in case you’re behind on your backing up.
My phone has been having battery issues, and it finally bit the dust; naturally this is while I’m traveling. A quick trip to the Apple store and I walked away with a brand new phone! Thankfully, I had randomly just backed up my entire phone to iTunes, AND I had backed up all my photos to Dropbox, just in case. I didn’t lose a thing– not even the photos from my trip– in the process. I am so relieved. Trust me. You’ll be thankful to have an updated backup should anything happen.
[Side note about backing up your photos: I used to use Carousel all the time and loved it. They recently shut it down and brought it back within the Dropbox app! I am obsessed with it and love that I can access my photos from any device or laptop, even if it’s not my own. As long as I have a wifi connection and a device with an internet browser, I’m good to go.]
Here’s what has been on my radar for the week:

ONE // College Entry Essays

I love that the NY Times publishes some of the top college essays every year. I always look forward to it. This years’ top pieces are great. It’s a great way to get a sense of what makes an essay great; if you’re applying to college soon file this away!

TWO // National Doughnut Tour

One of my friends from college launched the cutest baking blog. (It often gets picked up and reblogged by LaurenConrad.com, so you know it’s good!) She decided to go on a “national doughnut tour” with one of her friends; they just completed the checklist! It took them two years, but they made it to every one of the best doughnut shops around the country. What a fun way to stay connected with a friend too.

THREE // Post-It War

This story is such a great feel-good one. There is a post-it war going on between two office buildings. So many companies have gotten involved at this point, and the results are quite creative! I couldn’t help but smile as I scrolled through the photos.

FOUR // Striped Monogrammed Weekender

My favorite weekender bag is now available in a navy striped version, and it’s just too cute. I don’t need another one, but if you happen to be in the market, this is the one I’d recommend. It’s so cute, and I think the stripes make it perfect for a travel bag as it’ll disguise and stains that might pop up while on the go.

FIVE // Brielle-iant!

Brielle, the tiny and adorable and crazy smart girl, has a digital series for the Ellen show. I’ve watched this multiple times, and every viewing makes me smile a bit bigger. At the very least watch the part where she talks about the bones in the hand (about 2:30 into the video). I cannot handle the cuteness!

Anything fun on your radar for the week?

Glad to hear you're having fun in Chicago! It's one of my favorite cities. That post-it war just made my day, and I DO happen to be in the market for a sunshine satchel, so how exciting is this? Thanks for always keeping us in the know!

Welcome to Chicago! You got here just in time for the nice weather. I absolutely adore the monogramed weekender bag. I'm from Texas, so like 75% of my items are monogramed. I've been favoring the diamond pattern lately!

I just posted on my blog the importance of backing up your photos in Dropbox (and shared Gboard because I've been loving it since you posted about it last week!) I've also been looking at ordering that striped weekender for my monogram shop! I have the solid one and it's been my favorite but who doesn't love navy stripes too?!

Have a great weekend, I've been loving your Chicago snaps!

On My Radar

Garrett is working on Thanksgiving this year so I’m attempting to cross off “cook a turkey” of my bucket list today for a little pre-Thanksgiving dinner. (Wish me luck… should be interesting.)
The highlight of my week was getting three of my close friends (who don’t know each other!) together for dinner for a new book club. I’m definitely going to be sharing the experience soon because I think it’s something everyone should give a try!
Oh and I got to try on a new dress from Rent the Runway. Always fun to get dressed up in a gorgeous dress… I couldn’t get enough of the tiered sparkly skirt!
I honestly can’t stop listening to Justin Bieber’s new songs. Talk about a comeback! This video is a bit long, but it’s so absolutely hilarious. James Corden is super funny on his own and the two of them together is new level funny.
One of my friends with Type 1 Diabetes posted this article on Facebook. I know a little about the disease, but found the article to be really eye opening from the writer’s incredibly honest and personal perspective. You never really know what someone is going through.
I love videos of celebrities being good sports and playing along with kooky ideas. This video of Daniel Radcliffe manning Nylon’s front desk? Internet gold. He handles it like a pro too, even when he has no idea what he’s doing! (I also loved his reaction at the very end when he handed the desk back over to Lauren!)
It’s officially been decided. It’s impossible to stay mad when wearing squeaky shoes! (Get ready for your heart to melt.)
Picking out perfect gifts for friends and family is so much fun for me. I’ve also been having quite a bit of fun putting together gift guides for the blog. The Wit and Wonder gift section curated by Nordstrom is so worth a look. So many quirky little gifts. What really caught my eye: the cutest extension cord I’ve ever seen, “guard the cheese” cheese knives, mini alphabet embroidery kit, and a virtual reality headset.

Anything fun on your radar this week?

xoxo

PS DC/Bethesda readers… mark your calendars for December 5! I have a meet and greet planned! More details to come!

Hey Carly! Love these posts, noticed that it looks like you forgot the link to your friends article about diabetes – thought I would give you a heads up! Would love to read. Good luck with the turkey!

Thank you so much for featuring T1D! It's National Diabetes Awareness Month, and while we work to increase awareness and raise money for research we also take time to be grateful for sources of hope (like JDRF) and recognize the millions of everyday heroes in our midst who aren't letting diabetes keep them from living life to the fullest.

On My Radar

As you read this I’m either on my way to or just arriving in Mexico! I’m meeting my family there this afternoon and can’t wait. Just in time, too– the city is supposed to get five inches of snow! Swapping snow for sand? Yes, please.

Here’s what was on my radar this week:

ONE // This Is What Depression Looks Like

This. All of this. If there’s one thing you look at today, make it be this.

TWO // Disney’s $1 Billion Bet on a Magical Wristband

I’ve been to Disney a handful of times. While I enjoyed what I remember from the trips, I’m not head over heels for Disney. I am, however, fascinated by their new Magic Bands. I’ve been reading all these articles and blogs about it. (Did you know that there are blogs 100% dedicated to Disney!?) This Wired article is hands down the best one yet.

THREE // The Company You Work for Is Not Your Friend

This article seems like a bit of a Debbie Downer, but it’s actually a great read. When I look back at my first job out of college, the number one mistake I made was being too invested. How I viewed myself and how I identified myself was very intertwined with my job. I worked on finding a better balance and while there were better weeks than others, I made progress. Once I made my job my job, I found that I was happier… and also a better employee. That is, I took things less emotionally, I looked at problems objectively, and I could push myself at work and unwind afterward. If anything, I wish I had understood what this article talks about even more. I typically avoid the comment sections, but read the comments here. They’re great and add some more context.

FOUR // Captain Jack’s Wharf

Remember when I was dreaming of a summer cottage? I think I found an even better option. This wharf is honestly the coolest thing and the cabins are beautiful. Stunning even. I love how each one is unique and has a distinct personality. I’m obsessed with Venus– it has an orange bathtub!

FIVE // The People I Unfollowed on my Social Media Purge

For better or for worse, social media is part of our lives. Maybe not forever, but it is right now. What’s scary is that a lot of emotional baggage comes with social media. FOMO if you see your friends hanging out without you. Anger if you read something you don’t agree with. Frustration if you’re looking at someone’s spring break photos while you’re at work. Confusion because you can’t remember who that girl is and when you followed her? This post popped up on my Facebook feed and I liked it. I liked it a lot. I like how the author set up guidelines for who she would unfollow. I unfollow people all the time… even friends sometimes. I used to get irrationally annoyed with friends with what they posted. It’s not up to me what they post, so I’d rather just opt out of seeing it! (I actually mute people on Twitter and “unfollow” on Facebook. It’s win/win.)

You definitely have a knack for leaving when the cold snow waves come!! This week Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was definitely on my radar. I flew through the entire first season laughing the whole time. Thanks for the awesome recommendation!

Have fun in Mexico!

The Depression article is really good. Not many people realize that the people the interact with every single day may be severely depressed – I know I try and hide when I'm feeling anxious or down from people, I do it so well they think everything is happy and great. But it's really not.

On My Radar

My week summed up in one photo. Look at that face!!! Teddy loves being in Florida, and I don’t blame him. Poor thing has been cooped up indoors so much in the city because of the ice, salt, and temperatures.
On my radar…
ONE // PR Legend Alison Brod
Racked.com just rebranded! I’ve followed the site for years and I think the rebrand is awesome. I can’t wait to see what kind of features they will share in the future. I clicked over to an article from Facebook about Alison Brod and think it’s an interesting interview! If you’re interested in fashion and/or fashion PR I would definitely recommend it. (While we’re on the subject of Racked, Lo Bosworth was just named the Beauty + Wellness Editor at Large and they interviewed me, Jess, and Mackenzie for an article as well.)
TWO // #SpeakBeautiful
I saw this Dove campaign and (like just about every other Dove commercial I see) I loved it!! My only complaint is that I wished it was longer. I’m hoping there’s going to be more content behind it because it’s great and practical. There’s a ton of research that went into it, like women are 50% more likely to say something negative about themselves online than something positive. I also think it’s a great example of a strategic partnership between Dove and Twitter!
THREE // Snow in Canada
Okay… well this Buzzfeed round up makes NYC look like a tropical island!!! Sheesh!!! Those houses are absolutely buried. That is a lot of snow.
FOUR // Cuteness Overload
I mean… that is a mini-power girl in the making. I couldn’t stop smiling throughout the whole video. She may be three, but she is mighty!
FIVE // Lacoste x J. Crew
You know I love a good Lacoste. It’s all I wore in high school and it’s my go-to shirt for the summer time. I love to wear them with my favorite chino shorts for a casual look or a bit chicer with simple white jeans. I couldn’t be more excited about the collaboration between Lacoste and J. Crew! Polos for babies, kids, men, and women. I think I need one in every color.

I absolutely loved that Dove ad! Such a positive and powerful message. Also, that little girl is by far the cutest thing ever. The SNL 40th anniversary episode is all I can talk about recently. I loved all the celebs that they had perform and I was laughing throughout the whole episode. It's crazy to think that such a classic show has been around for so long!

Thanks for posting the Dove ad – they have such great, empowering campaigns. And I am so excited about the Racked.com re-brand too, so much more engaging! {There goes another couple hours of my day . . . . :-)}

That snow gives me PTSD flashbacks. I lived in New Brunswick for four years and it really was/is as bad as it looks. The only bright side is that usually these are small towns so it isn't as terrible to have to walk everywhere.

On My Radar

One picture to sum up my entire week:
Iced coffee for days. So much summer sunshine and I am one happy girl! I normally get an iced coffee from Starbucks every afternoon, but Dunkin Donuts is such a treat. Seriously, they make their iced coffee with 50% sugar or something… it’s so good and so addicting. (They have a cookie dough flavored one. Ummm… someone try it for me and let me know how it is?!)
Things on my radar this week:
TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY NEW EMOJIS. I can’t wait. Some are beyond ridiculous (like Man in Business Suit Levitating), but I really can’t wait to have more little friends to play with. (I must admit to being disappointed in no taco!) Emoji is certainly its own language… and one that I pride myself on being fluent in.
TWO // Love Limzy
Omg, these are the most beautiful pieces of art ever. The mix of watercolor and real petals are simply perfection. Growing up, I had these little framed prints in my room of drawings that were flowers, but people. Love Limzy’s works of art really remind me of those in a modern way. Hello, gorgeous. (PS She has some prints for sale!)
Best list ever? I think yes. Literally the best books ever; brings so many memories back to me. I read all of the Babysitter’s Club books (some sort of club we were in where they mailed us books every month) and Stacey was my favorite! Anyone else read the Karen, little sister books too? As for the number one on the list? 100% YES.
FOUR // Essie’s Story
Want a serious boost of career inspiration? You have to read this article about how Essie got her nail polishes off the ground. It’s amazing, and a true demonstration of how important it is to believe in yourself and to have a lot of guts and gumption when it comes to your career.
Warning: Be prepared to dedicate some time to watching these videos! I personally love them all though. Apple ads are some of the greatest out there.
Anything interesting on your radar this week?

Dunkin donuts coffee actually doesn't have any sugar unless you order it sweetened or get one of the "swirl" flavors! I get it every day! But then again I'm in Massachusetts so I guess its a requirement to drink it here 🙂

Yes to that book list! I read all the Baby-Sitters Club books, and Hermoine Granger? Duh. I also enjoy the shout out to "A Little Princess". It's one of my favorites. 🙂

I was in that book club too! It was through Scholastic and they would send you 4 Babysitters Club Books a month in the order of the series. By the end I had like a 100 haha and I read all of them 🙂

On My Radar

Yay yay yay yay! I’m going to be at the beach for an entire week with my family in Florida starting tomorrow and I simply cannot wait. It’s going to be the best. But, just as a heads up, I think things might get a little quiet around here! I’ve never missed a day of posting for years (since about April of 2010!), but I feel like this might actually be a week where I take a legitimate break. That’s the plan, so we’ll see how it goes.
This week has been kind of a blur… just flying right on by! In a good way. Normally that final stretch between you and vacation takes forever, but it really feels like I blinked and now I’m dreading having to pack everything up. And Teddy is excited because he’s staying with my favorite neighbors in Tampa while we’re at the beach. 24/7 playtime with the most adorable and energetic girls on the block? I imagine that he will be having the time of his life. (No, but seriously… he loves them.) The real question here is how I will deal about being apart from him for a week!!

Anyway, onto some of the amazing things from the internet this week. Have I mentioned before how these are absolutely turning into my favorite posts?
I was searching the other day for outfit inspiration… and I tend to love crewcuts outfits (true story). While looking through pages upon pages of Google images, I saw the cutest illustration. Consider me officially obsessed with Erisha, the artist behind the blog A Thing Created.
A few people that I love made Time’s list and I definitely was introduced to a ton of new people and companies. Need a boost of inspiration? Look no further. Rarely am I impressed by everyone on a list (Don’t you think that sometimes other publications’ lists are….. scams?) TIME did a great job with this one. PS So proud of Tammy Tibbetts!
WOW. Just wow!!!! These are so real they’re unreal. No words. You have to check these out!
Moda Operandi had a trunk show with vintage Rolex watches. While the trunk show has since ended, the watches are gorgeous and just a lot of fun to look at (and add to those #wildwishlists). I mean, they’re just beautiful.

FIVE // Apple’s Holiday Ad
If you haven’t seen this already, you must watch it. And if you have watch it, I suggest a second (or third) viewing. I’ve watched it a handful of times and every time I get a little bit choked up. Apple absolutely, hands down NAILED IT.
What’s on your radar this week? Any fun weekend plans?

Take a break! You post so much excellent content but we all need a break every now and again! You shouldn't worry about college prep while your on the beach.

Also the Apple commercial is filled in my hometown, Edmonton!
